Accessorizing Your Home November 23 2016, 0 Comments

Putting art and photos up in your space is just like accessorizing your outfit.  It can be bold, eclectic, or modern depending on your personality.  My favorite walls are the ones that have different sizes, colors, textures, and objects. However, sleek and uniform walls can also add an elegance to a space.  Whether you like to pile on necklaces or just emphasize your statement earrings, the same can be done to your walls.

Bright Ikats November 21 2016, 0 Comments

Ikat is a beautiful form of resist dying that has had a long history in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and Japan.  The pattern is created by binding yarns in a tight wrapping. Bindings are altered to create new patterns and then the yarns dyed in different colors.  This amazing technique inspired us in ecru to imitate it but by using embroidery.  Using three different colors of thread, we created a collection of Ikat Embroidered Charms.

Globe Trotting Doris November 14 2016, 0 Comments

Doris Duke

I recently watched a movie about the tobacco heiress Doris Duke.  What fascinated me about Doris' life, is her passion for Islamic and Oriental artifacts.  Her house in Hawaii which was dedicated to the arts, which will be the subject of another post.  Besides her obsession with collectibles, she had a unique and quite forward sense of style.  From her days as a debutante to her later years in philanthropy, she always looked impeccable. Her interesting life is definitely worth reading about.

ecru's Soundtrack, Serge Gainsbourg's La Femme Des Uns Sous Le Corps Des Autres November 07 2016, 0 Comments

Today we decided to go to 1960s France with our music, and Serge encompasses that the most.

The Annual Jaipur Visit November 02 2016, 0 Comments

Last week I did my annual pilgrimage to Jaipur, which is always exciting and fun.  I got to meet with the production team at our Indian office.  First thing was looking at the amazing fabrics that Nur sourced for our lounge dresses.  The next order of business was visiting different factories and workshops.  I got to see what is being sampled for upcoming collections. My favorite part is the printing factory.  It always amazes me to see how artisans carve beautiful blocks and printers meticulously hand print our fabric. The natural rhythm they have while printing fabric is unbelievably calming. However, my latest obsession is the treasure trove that is the stringers workshop.  It's absolutely amazing with all the different stones displayed and dangled.  Just spectacular.

Almir Mavignier Bold Graphics October 10 2016, 0 Comments

I recently stumbled on Brazilian artist Almir Mavignier's work, and I absolutely love it.  His work is bold, bright, and graphic.  Born in Brazil, Mavignier studied art after his graduation from high school.  He painted his first abstract painting in 1949, and in 1951 he moved to Paris.  In addition to his abstract paintings, he is well known for his graphic posters which are the images that attracted me.

Aloha Hawaii April 20 2016, 0 Comments

Hawaii has always had it's appeal.  Sunshine, surf, tropical fruits, and hula dancers.   Who wouldn't want to spend time there?  What makes the place more appealing is the images from the 1950's of the islands.  From the advertisements to the black and white images of Elvis.

Tiled March 23 2016, 0 Comments

There's something quite beautiful when you walk into a space and you are surrounded by beautiful tiles.  That's why Morocco is quite mesmerizing.  Everywhere you go there is the beautiful zellige tiling which creates mosaics.  Just rows and rows of arabesque shapes in amazing colors.

Flowers for Sale March 21 2016, 0 Comments

Who doesn't love the smell when walking into a lush flower shop?  Imagine working with flowers.  That would be a dream, the smells and the colors.  When I stumbled on these images of flower sellers on the internet and my fantasy of working with flowers grew stronger.  Now I just need a bike to carry all my flowers...

Sunny Georges Dambier March 16 2016, 0 Comments

It is that time of the year when summer is just around the corner, and all I can think of is a vacation on a Mediterranean beach.  The photographs of Georges Dambier are also adding to this desire to lay on a beach all day.  Dambier's career took off when he took a photo of Rita Hayworth at the famous Paris night club Le Jimmy's. He was later hired by Elle magazine, and started to take pictures of models smiling and full of life. Dambier's was able to create intimate images because he was able to put his subjects at ease.  That's why these images are so bright!
